Working with a combination of typewritters, stamps and letterpress, Leslie Nichols creates portraits with text. These portraits visualize the historical context of women’s lives and suggest a sense of social heritage.
For her most recent large-scale portraits Nichols starts the work by interviewing the subject. "I weave together phrases from interviews with poems, essays, or historical documents that have some relevance to the sitter. As I visually layer words, I am interested in portraying the substance of contemporary women’s lives and creating connections to her story through time."
