About 4 years ago, after taking a clay workshop, I welcomed sculpture back into my life. My “creature” sculptures are 3-dimensional collages. Just like in my current paintings, my sculptures are assembled pieces of different images/beings. I combine different parts that play with contrasting materials — ceramic and fiber, smooth and rough, hard and soft. I create, knit, sew, felt, build, fire, and glaze all the sculpture parts. Most fabric pieces are made from antique linens and are dyed with tea and coffee. I love the symbolism of the animals — for example the deer as the gentle guide. The creatures are little companions, each with its own personality, that have been inspiring me and have been challenging me to branch out with my artwork. Working on these sculptures has brought back some of my early uninhibited creativity.
